The Galway Music Residency’s ambitious Lunchtime with ConTempo project entitled From Europe with Love continues on Tuesday 7th May at 1:10pm in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church. This three-year initiative celebrates the shared musical heritage of the European Union by exploring the string quartet repertoire from each of its 27 member countries. Speakers from the featured nations, embassies and local communities will introduce each concert providing unique personal perspectives on the music to be performed.

During this eight edition of From Europe with Love, audiences will be taken on a trip to Latvia where the wonderful ConTempo Quartet will perform String Quartet no. 3 by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks. Vasks, born in 1946 is one of the most influential and celebrated European contemporary composers. His later works, such as String Quartet no. 3, include elements of Latvian folk music. They are highly communicative works with a strong sense of harmony. String Quartet no. 3 is actually an exploration of Christmas, a pondering of the question ‘Is peace on earth possible?’ and a statement of the composer’s faith in the concept of ‘good will toward men’.

Skarleta Mukane will introduce this concert in celebration of Latvia. Ms Mukane is a member of the Latvian community in Galway and the Chairperson of LatWest Ireland. This organisation initiates and develops connections between Ireland and Latvia in enterprise, business, trade and tourism by linking organisations, government departments, chambers of commerce and so on.

The Galway Music Residency is delighted to continue its partnership with Caprice Café to offer From Europe with Love audience members an exclusive lunch deal.
