Galway Music Residency presents a digital version of its renowned multi-genre series Friday 20 to Sunday 22 August. 3 Kinds of Music has been one of the many Covid casualties depriving Galway audiences of a tasting menu of classical, jazz, folk and traditional music. Curated by music mastermind Matthew Berrill, the digital edition will feature some of Ireland’s best emerging and established musicians in pop-up gigs throughout the weekend.
The weekend will begin with an exciting set by sean nós dancer Emma O’Sullivan with Shane Fahy (guitar and voice) and Ronan O'Flaherty (fiddle) on Friday. The performances, which were filmed in The Mick Lally Theatre by Salty Productions will be available to enjoy for free on Facebook and YouTube at 1pm each day. Donations welcome.
Emma hails from Connemara, Co. Galway in the West of Ireland. An All-Ireland Champion, she has toured the globe with many of the top names in traditional Irish music. She is an experienced workshop facilitator and has spent over 10 years sharing this beautiful tradition both as a performer, educator and choreographer. Emma is best known for her energetic street performances and viral videos which have been shared by over 20 million people worldwide.
Emma is a remarkable artist who epitomizes the grace, power and joie de vivre of this dance form. A holder of the prestigious Mayor's Award for her contribution to arts and culture, she has delivered dance programs with Creative Ireland and was Dance Artist in Residence for Galway City in 2019.
During the pandemic, she established a successful online dance school (www.emmaosullivan.com) giving a global platform to the traditions of Connemara. Her dance retreats offer a unique opportunity to explore these art forms and the stunning landscape of the West of Ireland.
Galway Music Residency is supported by NUI Galway (education partner), the Arts Council, Galway City Council and Galway County Council.
