International Guest Artist in Residence for 2024 - Sander Saarmets

Sander Saarmets is an Estonian composer and electronic musician and will work with us over two months this winter, with performance, education and community outputs.

Sander has ventured across international electronic scenes since the 2000s, studying composition and performance in Tallinn (EAMT), Stockholm (KMH), Lyon (CNSMD) and Hamburg (HfMT). He's known for creating music and soundscapes for various art forms, including film, contemporary dance and galleries. His music has been featured at New York Fashion Week and the Opening Program of Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024. In 2023, his composition and the sky turned yellow (2022) was selected as one of the recommended works at the 69th International Rostrum of Composers in Hague. He has released albums under the monikers of Muschraum & V4R1.

Sound in all of its beauty, power and fragility is Sander’s main field of interest, next to creating semi-open systems for both the players and the audience to get lost in.

This residency project is supported by Arts Council of Ireland’s International Residency Initiatives Scheme. Galway Music Residency is delighted to partner with the Arvo Part Centre and the Estonian Centre for Contemporary Music on this intiative, and with Áras Éanna on this showcase event.
