Lunchtimes with ConTempo, October 2024

Celebrating Michaelmas

Venue: St Nicholas' Collegiate Church, Lombard St, Galway

Date: 01 October 2024 at 1:10pm

Price: Free, Donations Welcome

ConTempo Quartet will perform a varied repertoire celebrating Michaelmas on Tuesday 1 October at 1:10pm in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church as part of Lunchtimes with ConTempo.

Michaelmas marks the movement into winter with shorter days and colder weather. Michaelmas was also known as the “Goose Harvest” – perhaps because geese were plump and ready to be eaten at this time – it was thought that if you ate goose on Michaelmas you wouldn’t want for anything the rest of the year. However, legend also has it that when the son of a king choked on a goose bone and was restored to life by St Patrick, the king ordered a goose to be sacrificed every Michaelmas to honour his son’s rescuer.

Our Michaelmas programme features classical and contemporary works that contemplate the completion of harvest and the movement into winter. ConTempo Quartet will perform movements from Smetana Quartet No. 1 - From my Life, Peteris Vasks’, Quartet No. 3, Schumann’s Quartet No. 3, Op. 4, Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 13, Op. 130. The concert will be introduced with a reading of Gathering Leaves by Robert Frost, by Andie Villegas, a recent graduate of Drama, Theatre and Performance from University of Galway.

Entry is free, all are welcome. Donations are welcome. No booking is required.
