Galway Music Residency presents a digital version of its renowned multi-genre series this Saturday 12th December. 3 Kinds of Music was one of the many Covid casualties, depriving Galway audiences of a tasting menu of classical, jazz, folk and traditional music earlier this year. This digital edition will treat audiences to musical pop-ups throughout a single day, featuring short performances from the wide array of musicians who were due to perform last spring. Curated by music mastermind Matthew Berrill, the one-day festival will feature some of Ireland’s best emerging and established musicians on Facebook and YouTube at 𝟭𝟭𝗮𝗺, 𝟭𝗽𝗺, 𝟯𝗽𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟱𝗽𝗺, 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲.
Enjoy performances from ConTempo Quartet, featuring John Caulfield (classical), Dave Clancy with Eoin Wynne and Matthew Berrill (Folk), Marueen and Brendan Browne (trad) and Róísín Mulliez with Jimmy Fitzgerald (Jazz).
The Galway Music Residency is supported by NUI Galway (education partner), the Arts Council, Galway City and County Councils and GMIT. Donations welcome. For further information, visit www.thegalwaymusicresidency.ie.

Galway Music Residency’s From Europe with Love is back with its final instalment of 2020 on Tuesday 1 December at 1pm. This special edition of the series sees ConTempo Quartet celebrate their native Romania on Great Union Day. This national holiday in Romania marks the unification of Transylvania, Bessarabia and Bukovina with the Romanian Kingdom in 1918.
ConTempo Quartet will perform a varied programme, showcasing the very best of Romanian music from works by celebrated composers George Enescu and Theodor Grigoriu, to lesser known musical gems. With a strong traditional folk theme throughout, the concert will be a toe-tapping lunchtime treat!
Galway Music Residency is honoured that this event will be introduced by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Ireland, Mrs. Manuela Breazu. Though a live audience is not possible, the lunchtime concert will be broadcast from the beautiful Oughterard Courthouse and will be available to watch for FREE on Facebook and YouTube. From Europe with Love is back with another instalment slightly later than planned on Friday 6 November at 1pm. This month ConTempo Quartet visit Croatia, the home of our sister European Capital of Culture Rijeka, to explore the music of female composer Dora Pejačević. Though a live audience is not possible, the lunchtime concert will be broadcast from the beautiful Oughterard Courthouse and will be available to watch for FREE on Facebook and YouTube.
Galway Music Residency is dedicated to showcasing the music of talented female composers and Dora Pejačević (1885-1923) is no exception. Considered a major Croatian composer, she left behind an impressive catalogue of 106 compositions when she died at just 37 due to complications following childbirth. She was descended from one of the most distinguished noble families in Croatia and was the daughter of a Hungarian-Croatian Count Teodor Pejačević who served as Ban (ruler) of Croatia-Slavonia between 1903 and 1907. Pejačević was given her first piano lessons by her mother, a Hungarian Baroness and talented pianist in her own right, and studied music in Croatia and Germany from an early age. However, she was mostly self-taught and was an accomplished pianist, violinist, composer, actress and patron of the arts. Sadly, much of her work remains unpublished. ConTempo Quartet will perform Pejačević’s String Quartet in C Minor Op 58, a rich and romantic work and the perfect antidote to the Level 5 blues! An introduction to the music will be given by Galway-based Croatian potter Jed Gjerek.

From Europe with Love is back! Following 6 months of uncertainty and many concert cancellations, Galway Music Residency is delighted to return to Live events, albeit under very different circumstances. From Europe with Love, the organisation’s ambitious monthly lunchtime series exploring string quartet repertoire from all 27 EU member countries, resumes in its temporary home, The Mick Lally Theatre.
ConTempo Quartet, who are originally from Romania, will quite suitably perform Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances. This suite of six short pieces was originally composed for piano, but was later orchestrated for small ensemble. The suite is based on seven Romanian tunes from Transylvania and according to the composer should take precisely four minutes and three seconds to perform! In addition to these Dances, the quartet will perform Bartók’s String Quartet No. 4. This work is considered as one of the composer’s masterpieces. It contains musical ideas from Hungarian, Romanian and Bulgarian music and demands great technical skill from the performers. It is the first time in his published work that the now famous ‘Bartók Pizzicato’ is heard, where the performers pluck a string so hard, it snaps against the instrument. An introduction to the music will be given by Galway-based Hungarian pianist, piano teacher and accompanist David Szabo.
From Europe with Love will take place in line with government regulations and GMR is working closely with the venue’s team to ensure all safety controls are in place. Upon booking, patrons will receive clear guidelines to follow when attending the venue, so they can enjoy these performances in safety and comfort. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, only a reduced audience can be facilitated and booking is essential. However, continuing its commitment to making high-quality music accessible to as many people as possible, Galway Music Residency will be live streaming these events for FREE on our Facebook page for all to enjoy from the comfort of their own homes. Online donations are welcome.
Tickets for live attendance cost €6 each will be sold in pairs so that patrons from the same household can attend together. They are available from https://www.druid.ie/the-mick-lally-theatre/whats-on

What do you get when you combine ConTempo Quartet with Jazz musicians? JazzTempo! To close the summer, Galway Music Residency brings you a special Live Streamed event on Friday 28th August at 1pm.
This event will be the culmination of an intensive socially distanced residency shared by ConTempo Quartet and four Galway city and county based Jazz musicians: Matthew Berrill (clarinet/sax), Aengus Hackett (guitar), Roisín Mulliez (voice) and Barry Donohue (Double bass). During this time of experimentation, the musicians will challenge one another and learn from each other's experiences in their respective music genres. Based on new compositions by Matthew Berrill and a number of Jazz standards, the musicians will develop a new work of music for performance, taking inspiration from both the 'Jazz' and 'Classical' idioms.
The 40-minute performance, which will take place in the beautiful surrounds of the Oughterard Courthouse in County Galway, can be watched live on Facebook (@thegalwaymusicresidency) free of charge, with donations most welcome.
