The National String Quartet Foundation, in association with Galway Music Residency, is delighted to announce the first tour in its autumn season of fifty chamber music concerts nationwide. These concerts will be performed by nine groups, all of which include Irish or Irish-based musicians. The Foundation’s touring programme is supported by the Arts Council and by RTÉ Lyric FM. This tour is supported by RTE Supporting the Arts.

Contempo Quartet is the resident ensemble of Galway Music Residency and was RTE’s Resident Quartet from 2014 until 2019. Praised as a “fabulous foursome” (Irish Independent) and noted for performances which are “exceptional” (The Strad) and “full of imaginative daring” (The Irish Times), ConTempo Quartet has forged a unique place in Irish musical life.

For this tour, which includes concerts in Galway, Listowel, Tinahely, Navan, Wexford, Dublin and Portumna, ConTempo Quartet presents two Irish string quartets alongside alongside Brahms’ sunny, uplifting B flat major quartet, written in 1875. Ina Boyle’s lovely E minor Quartet was written in Enniskerry in 1934, and Galway’s Jane O’Leary wrote her Strings in the Air, Songs in the Stones in 2021.

The opening concert of the season in Galway City also marks the opening of the Galway Music Residency’s autumn 2022 series of Lunchtimes with ConTempo which continue on the first Tuesday of each month in the stunning surroundings of St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church.
